Cash ISA or savings account?
The right answer depends on how much interest you earn and how you’re taxed, not on which pays the bigger headline rate.
Work out the tax on your interest →Savings account
Usually the higher rate
Interest counts as taxable income, though most people have an allowance before any tax is due. Rates here tend to run above the ISA equivalents.
Cash ISA
Sheltered from tax
Interest is sheltered from UK income tax within ISA rules, and there’s a limit on what you can pay in each tax year. Transfers keep older savings sheltered.
Before you move your money
Know what the rate costs you.
A rate on its own does not tell you much. What it is worth depends on how much you put in, how long it stays there, and what tax you pay on the interest.
