01 · ENERGY
Forecasts point to a 25% rise in January, to around £2,150 a year
Ofgem will not announce the exact January price cap until 25 November, but industry forecasts point to a rise of close to 25%. EDF have warned it could climb as much as 30%.
What you can do right now is lock in a fixed rate. Several of the major suppliers have launched fixed tariffs that already sit below the October price cap.
Run a comparison and see whether fixing beats what you are on today.
The catch: a fixed rate can carry exit fees if you leave before the term is up.

02 · BROADBAND
Out of contract? You are probably overpaying
Ofcom reports that 28% of broadband customers are out of contract. On average they pay about £8 a month more than they need to, which is £96 a year, and that is before the sign up bonuses worth up to £200.
Ofcom have also brought in the one touch switch process. You contact your new provider and nobody else, and they cancel the old service for you.
Deals we have seen recently:
900Mbps for £19 a month
500Mbps for £16 a month
The catch: the £96 saving and the upfront bonuses are not available at every address. A full market comparison is the only way to see what you can actually get where you live.
03 · BANK SWITCHING
New: Lloyds are paying £200 to switch
Lloyds have just launched a new switching bonus. £200 in cash, paid within 14 working days of the switch completing, which is one of the fastest payouts of any deal on the market.
Move at least 3 Direct Debits across using the Current Account Switch Service, open a Club Lloyds account, and that is it.
The deadline is 9 December 2026, so there is plenty of time. And there is over £1,000 in switch bonuses available right now across all the banks.
The catch: Club Lloyds carries a monthly fee, refunded if you pay in £2,000 or more a month. You also cannot have taken a switch bonus from Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland since 1 January 2023.
04 · MOBILE
Up to £400 cashback on Samsung handsets
Some of our providers are paying up to £400 in cashback on selected Samsung models, which takes as much as 33% off the price.
S26 FE: £200 cashback
S26 Plus: £250 cashback
Fold8: £350 cashback
Fold8 Ultra: £400 cashback
The catch: a discount is only a discount if you need it and were going to buy it anyway.
05 · SAVINGS
Lloyds, Santander, Co-op and first direct are all paying 7% or more
Between them these four regular savers take £1,000 a month in deposits, and every one of them pays 7% or higher. If your money is sitting somewhere earning nothing, it is worth opening one.
The catch: regular savers cap how much you can pay in each month, but running a few of them alongside each other lifts that ceiling a long way.

William's take
Energy bills have been all over the media this week. With all the political unrest around the world, it is ordinary people who end up carrying the consequences.
We cannot change any of that. What we can do is protect ourselves where we are able to.
So go and look at your energy bill. Work out whether fixing is the better option for you. On average it saves about £200 a year against the price cap, and it takes a couple of minutes to check.
