Quick answer · figures checked 7 November 2026

Is So Energy any good?
Customers rate it well on Trustpilot (4.5/5, over 32,000 reviews) and it has the lowest formal complaint rate of any supplier in Which?’s 2026 survey. The weaker marks come from Which?’s policy assessment and Citizens Advice’s complaints data which are worth knowing, but the day-to-day customer experience scores are solid for a mid-sized supplier.
Does So Energy offer 100% renewable energy?
Renewable electricity on most tariffs, matched by REGO certificates. Gas is not certified as green. So Flex (the default variable tariff) does not include renewable electricity.

So Energy is a UK energy supplier founded in 2015 and now part of ESB Group, which is an Irish state-owned energy company. It supplies around 300,000 UK homes and positions itself as a straightforward, transparent alternative to the Big Six.

So Energy tariffs

So Energy offers fixed, variable, tracker and time-of-use options.

So Flex: A variable tariff with no exit fees however rates move with the market. This is the default option if you don’t pick a fixed deal.

So Green Tracker: A variable tracker tariff. Electricity is 100% renewable (matched by REGO certificates). This tracks market movements and is currently pricing slightly below So Flex.

So Fixed 12m / 24m: Fixed-term contracts locking in your unit rate for 12 or 24 months. Exit fees apply, £75 per fuel on the 12-month fix and £95 on the 24-month, except in the final 49 days of your contract when you can switch penalty-free.

So EV: A time-of-use tariff for electric vehicle drivers, launched in 2025. This offers cheaper rates overnight when you’re most likely to charge.

Renewable electricity: All tariffs except So Flex come with 100% renewable electricity, matched by REGO certificates. Gas is not certified as green on any tariff.

Unit rates vary by region: check our energy comparison for your exact postcode price before comparing.

How So Energy prices compare to the price cap

The Ofgem price cap for October to December 2026 sets a typical dual-fuel bill at £1,723/year for a direct debit customer, based on:

  • Electricity: 26.32p/kWh, 54.83p/day standing charge
  • Gas: 7.97p/kWh, 29.68p/day standing charge

So Energy’s variable tariffs (So Flex, So Green Tracker) sit around the price cap level which limits what they can charge on variable deals. Fixed tariffs may sit above or below depending on when you locked in and which length you chose.

So Energy and its rivals, priced for your home: fixed and variable, with every exit fee shown.

Customer satisfaction

Trustpilot: 4.5/5 (Excellent), based on over 32,000 reviews (November 2026).

Which? (2026): Which? energy customer data, from its survey of September to October 2025

  • Customer survey score: 76%, joint 5th of 17 suppliers
  • Which? policy assessment score: 44%, the lowest of any supplier in the survey
  • Not a Which? Recommended Provider
  • Only 2% of customers made a formal complaint in the past year, the lowest of any supplier surveyed

Citizens Advice (April to June 2026): its latest energy supplier star rating

  • Overall score: 2.85/5, 11th of 16 in the comparison table
  • Complaints received: 43.7 per 10,000 customers
  • Call wait time: 2 minutes average
  • Email response within 2 days: 91.9% of the time
  • Webchat response: 5 minutes 8 seconds average
  • Bill accuracy: 97.08% (smart meters), 93.76% (traditional meters)
  • Customer commitments score: 5/5, a member of the Energy Switch Guarantee and the Vulnerability Commitment

The picture is split. Customers rate So Energy well for ease of contact and clear statements. The Which? policy assessment score is the weakest in the market, covering things like tariff transparency, complaints handling processes and support availability.

Smart meters

So Energy supports smart meters on all tariffs.

  • SMETS2 meters (most meters installed after 2018): full smart functionality continues after switching, no interruption
  • SMETS1 meters (mostly installed before 2018): most are now compatible, but you may see a temporary loss of smart features after switching, but these usually return within a few days
  • No smart meter yet: So Energy can install one for electricity-only, gas-only or dual-fuel customers

So Energy does not accept prepayment meter customers.

Switching to So Energy

Switching takes around 5 working days under Faster Switching. Your supply is not interrupted during the process, and your old supplier handles the handover.

You can switch to So Energy if you:

  • Are on a credit (direct debit or quarterly bill) meter
  • Are a UK residential customer
  • Do not have a prepayment meter

If you’re in a fixed contract with your current supplier, check whether exit fees apply before switching.

How to contact So Energy

  • Phone: 0330 111 5050
  • Email: help@so.energy
  • Webchat: available on their website
  • Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, closed weekends and bank holidays
  • Gas emergency (24/7): 0800 111 999

No weekend support is a downside to So Energy as if something goes wrong on a Saturday, you’re waiting until Monday. They also are online only from 9:00 till 17:00 meaning this could fall in line with your work hours.
